In addition to our Emergency Preparedness document for a quick overview of what you will need to be aware of during events like this, we also highly recommend visiting www.GCOEM.org to download the Galveston County Emergency and Disaster Guide. It is filled with tips and information to help you prepare.

The City of Kemah urges you to please stay abreast of weather developments by following local weather news reports for Galveston County. And observing communications from the US National Weather Service Houston-Galveston Texas for the latest information.

The National Weather Service has produced the following information:

Summary

Patchy dense fog will dissipate by the mid-morning. Cold front will move through the area on Wednesday and will bring a slight risk for strong to severe thunderstorms. Moderate to strong winds will follow the frontal passage and continue through Friday.

Overview

Dense fog advisories are in effect for portions of the area this morning for mainly areas along and south of I-10 and for the Bays. Conditions should rapidly improve through the mid-morning, but there redevelopment of patchy dense fog is possible tonight into Tuesday morning.

A cold front will move through the area on Wednesday from northwest to southeast. Showers and thunderstorm will be possible overnight Tuesday night ahead of the front, and then a line of thunderstorms will accompany the frontal passage on Wednesday. There is a Slight Risk for strong to severe thunderstorms to develop with the frontal passage with the main threat being strong, gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall. Recent lack of rain and fast movement of the front will help to lower the flood threat, but rainfall rates of 1-2+" per hour is possible in the stronger storms which may result in localized urban ponding in poor drainage areas. Exact frontal passage timing is not known at the moment, but right now it is looking like the front will move through the Bryan-College Station area around sunrise, then through the Houston Metro area the mid to late morning, and then off the coast during the afternoon. Severe weather threat greatly diminishes after the frontal passage. Breezy northwesterly winds will continue through Friday.

Marine and Coastal Hazards

Patchy dense fog is occurring in the northern sections of the Bays this morning, but conditions should rapidly improve through the midmorning. There is a chance for patchy fog to redevelop tonight into Tuesday morning.

Small craft advisories are likely needed starting Tuesday night for moderate onshore winds (15 - 25kts) and continuing through Friday due to moderate to strong (20 - 30kt Gusts 35kts) northwesterly winds behind the cold front. Localized gusty winds are also possible on Wednesday near any strong or severe thunderstorms.

Tides: The onshore flow on Tuesday will lead to high tide Tuesday night to be around 3.5 to 4ft above MLLW, which is approaching Coastal Flood Advisory criteria. Then the strong offshore flow behind the front may lead to Low Water Advisories for the Bays on Thursday.
